We Hate Children - Psalm 127
"In spite of all the professed concern for children in our day, the truth is, we hate children...We hate children because we see nothing wrong with killing those that are inconvenient, untimely, disruptive or who have physical defects or even are not the sex we desired...We hate children because we refuse to have them...We hate children because we love ourselves...We hate children because we hate God and distrust Him."
This sermon was linked on Large Family Mothering. It is amazing to see a pastor take a stance on this issue. I especially enjoyed it because it was a Presbyterian pastor which is our church's denomination!
He really makes a good point that society views children as a burden, and that we prevent them because of this inconvenience to our lives; Heaven forbid they get in the way of a career, cost us too much, or jeopardize our future retirement years because they will still be living in our house well into our retirement years. I think the Jeub Family would attest to the fact that it is possible to travel across country with a Baker's Dozen.
There is nothing worse than hearing these comments and questions from everyone:
- Are you going to have more?
- How will you be able to afford them- you know kids cost SOOOOOO much these days?
- How will you pay for all their college costs?
- You have how many daughters? How will you pay for all their weddings?
- You're too old - you don't want little ones still around while you are in your 50 - 60's do you?
Not once have I ever heard these following questions asked of me, even though they are just as relevant:
- You have how many parents to take care of in their old age (in today's age, with step-parents this question is valid)?
- Do you know how much assisted living costs these days - your parents don't have a HUGE nestegg to help you out - do they?
- How will you pay for all their medical costs?
- How will you pay for all their funeral costs?
- You're too young to have to be stuck taking care of your invalid parents day in and day out! You should be out traveling the world and enjoying life!
So does that mean that we will begin to euthanize our elderly grandparents and parents because they are "burdensome" and they get in our way or cost us too much when the healthcare system doesn't pay for their medical costs anymore?
Just something to ponder and think about this week.
